Today is World Sleep Day, and this year’s theme is Sleep Well, Live Better. I’ve been a delegate for 8 years now, and every year the research reminds me just how much we underestimate sleep.

This year’s theme is Sleep Well. Live Better.

So here are a few things worth knowing.

Sleep is not a luxury

We’ve known for a while that sleep sits alongside food and exercise as a pillar of health. But most of us still treat it as the thing we sacrifice first when life gets busy.

The research is clear;  poor sleep is linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even a weakened immune system. And here’s a sobering one: being sleep deprived can affect your judgement and reaction time in the same way as being over the legal alcohol limit.

It’s not just about hours

Healthy sleep is more than clocking up seven hours. There are six dimensions worth paying attention to, how long you sleep, how well you fall and stay asleep, when you sleep, how consistent your sleep and wake times are, how alert you feel during the day, and whether you actually feel satisfied with your sleep. If one of those is off, you’ll feel it.

Where to start

Keep your sleep and wake times consistent, even on weekends. Make your bedroom somewhere you can actually relax. Aim for at least seven hours. And during the day, ask yourself honestly, do I feel rested?
Small questions lead to real changes.
